Agreed, get Prophecies first. It's a much better introduction to the game.

I'd say factions first since you currently have a greater player density there. Prophecies feels more "wide open", but total content is similar. If you enjoy good PvP, go with Factions first for the 12v12 battles and greater variety of character choices.

The game pace is totally different than your standard MMO and leveling is a bit of a joke. While story is linear, character development is more player controlled and variable.

Only get prophecies if you don't mind going through the game like it's just single player and you don't mind using teams of npc henchmen. You'll be hard pressed finding too many people still in the prophecies outposts. There are still some heavily populated like toa or drokars. If you're looking for a community, most people are in factions now, albeit it seems a bit crowded.

Have you even tried playing prophecies since factions came out? There's plenty of people. I recently created a new warrior and have done every mission (so far, I'm up to Kryta) with full player teams, and getting a group hasn't ever taken over 5 minutes for any of them (other than Borlis Pass, which took around 15 mins, probably because it was about 1:00 AM).

I would have to disagree with this completly..

All WoW players I know who tried prophecies for abit and said they didnt like it from the very start, they persisted but eventually switched to WoW, never to be seen again, "compared to WoW, GW feels Empty" they said.

They are nearly all back playing factions, and even unsubscribed their WoW.

I think the 12vs12 is the swinger, but the challenge missions, Faction battles are very addictive.

Factions is also similar to WoW in that you have two sides, like Horde and Alliance.. not quite the same obviously, there isnt as much 'hatred' but still it gives you something to fight for..

As has been pointed out, with either factions or Prophecies you get the 'battle isles' so prophecies is now just a story with a few skills and armor you cant get in factions, but Factions is a GAME, definatly more fun and addictive than prophecies.

Any other player I would say, get prophecies, but for a WoW player.. Prophecies will be hideously boring (unless they are really determined)

The game is what you make of it, and Prophecies IS better than Factions. In my opinion of course.

Game #1 Prophecies

The best computer game I have ever played and well worth every penny you put in to it. Factions, although it is marketed as Standalone, is an 'extension' to Prophecies and by jumping in to Factions, you'd be missing out on a lot.

Prohpecies is fascinating whether you decide to edge towards PvE or PvP:

PVE: Great fun, rewarding with amazing environments (mountains, jungle, desert, plains, volcanic island,) and weird and wonderful monsters.
PVP: Highly challenging and requires sharp co-operation, team work and skill. winners of the tournament can have their name or Guild name displayed on every single player's screen.

Cantha = Grinding.

I agree.
GW:F seems much more "fast paced" if you ask me. And thats a pretty good thing. GW:P may be cool to explore and stuff... but honestly, GW:F gets my vote. Maybe its because GW:F is just new and all exciting and stuff, but GW:F gets you into "High-level play" much faster, and gives you all you need to know in a much shorter amout of time.

Well known fact : WoW = Grinding.

So IF what you say is true, then a WoW player would prefer Factions over Prophecies!

However, its as Andy_M says, the game is what you make it, the only way Factions becomes grind is if you refuse to play the whole game.

There are still plenty of people playing the original campaign (Prophecies). No problems getting groups.

I just took my assassin over to Tyria last night and there were plenty of people there. In fact, some areas had more districts than they used to have before Factions came out. I think Factions has renewed some people's interest in Prophecies.

Not if they're looking for a change.

Agree on buying both, I think every GW player must have been playing in Tyria.
The sad picture of ascolan,
the beuty of the druids,
the hot sun in the desert,
the cold weather of the mountains,
the dark and mean corners in surrow's furnace,
the evil look of Fire island,
fighting your mirror,
starting a chet in Lions arch,

I realy dont want to miss this things

Tyria O tyria what would i do with out you?

Default Prophecies vs Factions

Okay, I'm going to become the devils advocate for a moment.

Factions has a way better tutorial than Prophecies (Original Guild Wars). They explain everything in the tutorial in Factions. From how to open a chest, to death, what is a death penalty, skills, how to fight as a group with NPCs, etc.

Prophecies only tells you how to move and look at quest logs (Factions does that too). Unfortunately, Prophecies forces you to join with other people for two quests (this is a game version of "how to meet new people"). Without joining with other people, you don't get to complete the quest, and you won't get a Resurection Signet.

As far as game play is concerned and storyline, Prophecies is the way to go. It has more of a story line + aftermath of the original storyline + more monsters, more skills, and as far as I know more places to explore. Prophecies allows you to go not just one small island or continent, but a large continent + a small island + a medium island (the desert I think is an island). Anyway, more monsters, more treasure, more skills and beautiful scenary.

Factions is more of a Romeo & Juliet story taking place in Asia. Not that its a bad thing, but its been done before. (At least I look at like that).

One of the good things about Factions is the fact that you can get to choose 1 of 8 characters as your primary profession. Prophecies only allows you to choose out of 6.

Prophecies still has a very large gathering, so you won't have to worry about being alone in the game. (Even in the tutorial, people hang around because they don't want to leave the beautiful scenary there).

I have both Factions & Prophecies, and I jump back and forth. I'm sure others do as well.
